CTE Student Spotlight!

Student Spotlight Louella Grablick 12th Grade Frankenmuth H.S. “Louella’s dedication and passion for dentistry have been evident throughout her 2-years as an intern at Frankenmuth Family Dental. From the moment she stepped into the office, she wholeheartedly embraced the learning experience. Her placement supervisors have continuously praised her for her strong work ethic, eagerness to learn, and ability to adapt to new challenges. Her journey is a true testament to the power of work-based learning, and there is no doubt she will continue to thrive in the dental profession. We are incredibly proud of her growth and the passion she brings to her future career!” Riley Klein, Business & Career & Technical Education Teacher “ From a young age, around five or six dentistry has always been in the back of my mind. After hearing from friends about an internship opportunity, I thought it was a good idea to get a little taste. In my junior year, I interned for 1-hour of my day at Frankenmuth Family Dental. Work-Based Learning Connecting Students to Employers and Employers to Students

Gabby Wirth - Heritage High School Senior

Employer - Saginaw YMCA

"In my work-based learning (WBL) experience, I learned about human services. Being a lifeguard means knowing how to help people quickly and efficiently. It allows me to work with other people in intense situations. I intend to go into marine life when older, so being in the water as much as possible is extremely important to me. This career opportunity is important to me in many ways, from getting to know the sweetest members to saving their lives if it comes down to it. My Psychology class will support me in my WBL experience because it will provide me with more insight into why we do what we do as people. It will give me a better understanding as to why people may be having a certain reaction to a workout or the chlorine in the pool. Psychology may also help me keep a clearer headspace in an extreme situation.

I learned a lot of different things about the way our brain allows our bodies to function. This is helpful when it comes to lifeguarding because it allows me to have a better idea of what may be going on with someone who suffers from a chronic illness, or a mental illness, etc."

Her employer, Sandra Cline, Aquatics Director, Saginaw YMCA, says, "I'm so excited that Gabby has the opportunity to use her lifeguarding job as a work-based learning experience. It gives me an opportunity to pay forward being a mentor to a high school student just as some one did for me.   I would love to have other students with swimming skills consider becoming lifeguards and take advantage of this amazing opportunity."

Career Exploration for Middle School Students with Emerge VR

Emerge VR is revolutionizing career exploration for middle school students by bringing immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences directly into classrooms. Their half-day to full-day visits provide 7th and 8th graders with hands-on opportunities to step into the roles of professionals across a variety of industries.

Each visit is interactive, engaging, and customized to meet a school’s unique needs. Emerge VR provides all necessary equipment—requiring only Wi-Fi access and an open space such as a classroom, common area, or gymnasium. A single session can accommodate up to 15 VR headsets simultaneously, ensuring an efficient and dynamic experience for students.

VR sessions are structured based on class size and period length. For example, in a 60-minute class with 30 students, each student typically spends 20 minutes in the headset, exploring 3-4 career pathways. These simulations expose students to a wide range of industries, helping them discover career options they may not have previously considered.

Before each visit, Emerge VR collaborates with administrators and teachers to coordinate logistics and ensure a smooth, impactful experience. Their team is highly adaptable, making it easy to bring VR career exploration to any school setting.

For a limited time, Emerge VR visits are completely free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. This is an exciting opportunity for schools to introduce students to career pathways through cutting-edge technology at no cost.

To bring Emerge VR to your school, contact Dennis Barlow, SISD Career Navigator, at dbarlow@sisd.cc. Let’s inspire the next generation through the power of virtual reality!

Saginaw County: For A Day or a Lifetime

Youth Ambassador Program Cohort Four - Public Safety Day

This month, Cohort 4 explored the vital roles of public safety professionals who work tirelessly to keep our community safe. Their action-packed day began with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Saginaw County Jail, where Undersheriff Gomez provided insights into daily operations and law enforcement challenges.

Next, they stepped into the halls of justice at the Saginaw County Courthouse, meeting with Judge Fichtner, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Blair Stevenson, and Assistant Public Defender Emilie Lyday to discuss the legal system and the balance of justice.

The group then geared up for a visit to Saginaw Fire Department Station 1, where firefighters shared their experiences responding to emergencies. The day wrapped up with a fascinating session with the Mobile Medical Response Team, learning how first responders provide critical care in high-stakes situations.

From law enforcement and the courts to fire and emergency medical services, Cohort 4 gained firsthand knowledge of the people and systems working around the clock to protect our community. A big thank you to all the professionals who took the time to share their expertise!

CTE/Early Middle College Programs

Mid-semester break begins next week, 3/3-3/7, for our Early College students at Delta College and SVSU.  During the high school break, students will still be expected to attend college classes.   Students are not excused because the homeschool isn't in session.  We always follow the college schedule.

EMC Juniors and Seniors will be registering for classes in the next few weeks.  Students will have the option to take up to 2 classes per semester in the 12th-grade year, but only with the homeschool counselor's approval, so that students are scheduled appropriately between their homeschool and SCC.  Keep in mind our county auditor has approved the following:

7 Block Schedule - 1 (3cr) College Course, SCC- Careers in Education, SCC- Careers in Education, World History, PE, PSY 211 (3 credits)

7 Block Schedule - 2 (3cr) College Courses, SCC- Careers in Education, SCC- Careers in Education, World History, PSY 211 (3 credits), ENG 111 (3 Credits)
